Action Groups Update - February 2026
Growing Communities Action Group
The walnut trees were planted in the Library bed during January. Due to the time of year, volunteers are currently meeting fortnightly. The bed near the William Elder Building is to have work undertaken by the Town Council, which leaves two beds (Library & Foul Ford) to work on currently. There may be capacity to have another bed, and this is something that the Group will be looking at over the next few weeks.
Transport and Active Travel Action Group
There are currently 11 active members, which is great news. The work of the Group alternates between their bike and bus priorities. One of the things being looked at is a leaflet/map illustrating all the bus routes in Berwick and perhaps cycle routes. It would be just one page, possibly A3, with different colour lines on the map representing the different bus routes, and maybe bus stops as well. The flip side would give links to timetables and further information. This would require funding, and so we are working on a funding application.
Campaign priorities are: 1) to ask the Council to consider closing the Old Bridge on Sundays. 2) to request that the proposed roof replacement on the bus shelter at Golden Square is changed to a complete refurbishment to make the bus shelter more user-friendly. 3) to monitor pedestrian use at the Asda junction, where there is a central pedestrian reservation, to help assess the need for a pedestrian crossing. 4) a possible Electric Bike Charging Station.
Tweed Estuary Pollution Action Group
Ongoing winter bi-monthly Algae Monitoring. We have had verification that the Environment Agency is continuing to analyse the data we are collecting.
Northumbrian Water has a significant investment programme for Berwick, but we will have to wait and see what difference that will make to pollution levels in the estuary as this budget covers many items besides the storm water overflows and updating of the sewage treatment works.
Warm Homes Action Group
The home energy information table at the Repair Café is continuing.
Zero Waste Hub Action Group
Repair Café & Tool Library
Repair Café: January RC was very busy. We are looking for more repairers on the sewing table. The Norman Hargreaves shop wants to stock our Repair Cafe leaflets for relevant customers. We work closely with the Duns Repair Cafe, where they celebrated their first anniversary of opening - with cake, candles and singing. It is our third anniversary in September, and Berwick Repair Café need to think about how we will celebrate that.
Tool Library: A funding bid has been submitted to enable the purchase of further tools. We should know by early April whether it has been successful.
