Background

Climate change means heavier rainfall and more floods. In turn this means increasing stormwater overflow incidents that contains sewage. More rain also increases agricultural chemical run off into the river system. This is both a national and a local problem.

Objectives of our group

  • To engage with Northumbrian Water, the Environment Agency and all relevant interest groups such as the Tweed Forum and The Rivers Trust to help address the problem. Also to engage with local water users including swimmers, anglers and boat users.

Events and actions

  • Awareness raising events have and will be held such as - question times at local Green Festivals, a Berwick sewage works visit, talks by relevant groups such as Tweed Forum.

  • Letter writing to MPs and Ministers, and responding to government consultations on the currently inadequate Environment Act 2021.

  • Investigation of volunteer water quality monitoring to supplement the now under-resourced Environment Agency work. To this end,  liaison with The Rivers Trust on citizen science, and Tweed Forum for link with LIFE WADER project funding.

  • Ongoing meetings and correspondence with Northumbrian Water regarding their own studies on improvement to bathing water quality at Spittal and pipework around stormwater overflow points.
