Action Groups Update - April 2026

Greener Berwick Action Group Updates

Growing Communities Action Group

There are four regular volunteers now, plus a few more who help on a more ad-hoc basis. Generally, we engage with four or five members of the public each time. We are awaiting Berwick Town Council doing the work to create the raised beds at Castlegate before we can re-plant them. The Library bed has been tidied, and we will be protecting the walnut trees from accidental hedge trimming damage and adding a compost bin. The four raised beds in the town centre will be included in ‘Berwick Open Gardens’ on Sunday 28 June.

Transport and Active Travel Action Group

Bus information provision has improved, and we have agreed to give Berwick Town Council a regular update on any problems. Northumberland County Council Members Georgina Hill and Nicole Brooke are keen to involve us in future discussions on transport.

Tweed Estuary Pollution Action Group

The macro-algae monitoring continues. The meeting with the Environment Agency and Natural England to review the monitoring findings from the last 12 months, is set for Wednesday 6th May (11am-1pm, Conference Room, William Elder Building, Castlegate). We are also awaiting a date for a meeting with Northumbrian Water on SuDS (sustainable drainage systems), which is one of the options they are looking at to reduce storm water overflow into the Tweed.

Information from the Peoples’ Commission on the Water Sector was sent to David Smith MP. We are setting up a meeting with him, possibly with other environment groups in the area, in the next couple of months, to discuss further.

Eyemouth High School has asked for a talk on our algae-monitoring work.

Zero Waste Hub Action Group

Repair Café & Tool Library

Repair Café: a new sewer has been recruited, and there were 6 repairers at the last Repair Cafe, which was a very busy one. An inventory of what the repairers need has been produced and a trolley purchased, to transport items to/from St Andrews and the Salvation Army Hall.

Tool Library: a new lead volunteer, with a knowledge of tools and their uses, is needed. The Facebook posts where we ‘tell a story’ about why someone borrowed a tool are working really well and creating interest in the Tool Library.

Larger premises are being sought, and funding bids for tools have been submitted, to enable the Tool Library to continue to grow.
