Background

We all know something about plastic pollution; it’s in our rivers, on our beaches, even inside some of the food we eat as tiny particles. Much has been done in the Berwick and Borders area to clear up litter. We see people attacking the problem with litter pickers in our parks and on our beaches, but the much harder challenge is to reduce plastic at source.

Bottles and other hard plastic items can be reused, but the majority still go to recycling or landfill. “Plastic Free” just means that a percentage of local businesses, schools and organisations have succeeded in reducing their use of plastic, not removing it altogether.

Objectives of our group

  • The campaigning organisation Surfers Against Sewage also runs a nationwide campaign to reduce Single Use Plastic in communities. Eyemouth has already been awarded the status of a ‘Plastic Free Community’ and we would like Berwick to follow suit.

  • Greener Berwick is working with Sea the Change (Sustainably, Education & Accessibility) to achieve ‘Plastic Free Community’ status for Berwick.

  • We also plan to hold other events to increase public awareness and will lobby our local councils to provide better recycling services.
