Greener Berwick Action Group Updates

Transport and Active Travel Action Group

Work on bikes and buses continues. Tim reported from Northumberland Cycling campaign and he is working on e bike charging at the Quayside – liaising with Look Out café as potential sponsor.

Improvements to Marygate for pedestrians discussed at last meeting including possibility of two zebra crossings where there are already dropped kerbs – to be raised with NCC.


Growing Communities Action Group

Apple trees planted, library beds mulched, Foul Ford beds weeded. One new member. Water butts at rear of library being investigated. Signs for beds to come.


Tweed Estuary Pollution Action Group

Training by Environment Agency (EA) on Nitrate monitoring at Fenham-le-Moor 22 April – 2 members attending.

Events coming up – 6 May at 1.30 Visitor Centre Walkergate EA and Newcastle University to present/discuss findings from our algae monitoring – Greener Berwick members to be invited via Mailchimp.

Beach picnic in support of Surfers Against Sewage national action day on sewage spills. 3pm, Saturday 17 May, south end Spittal Beach. Risk Assessment to be done for this event. Greener Berwick members to be invited via Mailchimp.

Submission made to the Peoples Commission on the Water Sector summarising our responses to FOI requests to EA over 3 years and making recommendations.

Several members attended Northumbrian Water drop-in day on 1 April. It appears that they intend to spend £120m over the next 5 years in the Berwick area to address sewage spills, including improvements to sewage works and pipework and sustainable urban drainage (SUD) throughout the town.

Agreed that Growing and Estuary groups would ask for meeting with Northumbrian Water to discuss SUD further.


Warm Homes Action Group

Energy advice continues to be given at the Repair Café once a month.


Zero Waste Hub Action Group

Report on Repair Café and Tool Library done for NCC. Horncliffe have asked Pepper for help with starting a repair café there and Pepper to talk to Greener Duns re tool library. Two PAT testing machines ordered from donation money. Repairers taking work home to repair need a further discussion.
